The Colosseum, or Flavian Amphitheatre, is located in the centre of the city of Rome and is the largest Roman amphitheatre in the world (holding an estimated 50 000 to 87 000 spectators). It is the most important Roman amphitheatre and the most impressive monument of ancient Rome that has come down to us. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980 - together with the entire historic centre of Rome - in 2007, as the only European monument, it was also listed among the New Seven Wonders of the World following a competition organised by the New Open World Corporation (NOWC).
